Whether you’re making a short or a feature film, having a low budget may seem like a challenge, but it doesn’t have to be. You don’t need a ton of money to tell a story but there a few things you could do to make this process easier.
In this article, RedHeart Productions is going to share three basic low budget filmmaking tips:
Tip One: Production Design is the secret ingredient of low budget films
Don’t forget that filmmaking is a visual medium! Well planned production design and proper lighting in filmmaking can elevate any low budget project. 100% guaranteed!
Tip Two: Effective Production Design
A good practice while in pre-production stage is to completely remove the dialogue from a particular scene and still be able to describe what is the mood, character and the theme. For example:
- Mood: How do you want your audience to feel when watching a certain scene?
- Character: Can your audience tell what kind of person your character is or how they’re feeling based on the set design
- Theme: The film or particular scene theme could be communicated through your set design as well.
Tip Three: Maximize your Production Design
Thrift Shops are any low budget films best friends!
From both new and used clothing, household goods, furniture, electronics, toys, tools and more, there is not need to buy new of anything to make that scene looks like a million bucks. Also, you will be helping your local community because some of these stores sales will be donated to Local Helping Locals, a tax-exempt (status pending) non-profit 501 organization.
Production design can be such a great storytelling tool because of the visual elements it employs. Filmmaking is also about creativity as well problem-solving. No matter what set you’re on, properly planned production design can be used to create movie magic.
You can make your low budget movie look like a multi-million dollar production by using production design as a fundamental tool to enhance any movie look.
